What is EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing)? This is a highly successful method of reducing or eliminating the effects of traumatic events. Dr. Francine Shapiro, Ph.D. discovered that by using eye movement, or bilateral stimulation, the brain could “reprocess” the traumatic situation. When something emotionally disturbing happens, the brain’s processing system isn’t always able to process it and put it into perceptive.
The disturbance can be a major traumatic event like a death, divorce, war, a car accident, or job loss. Repeated smaller life events like “bullying” can be successfully processed though EMDR. These events when left untreated could cause Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. People become “activated” or traumatized by certain daily triggers in their lives when left untreated. Many people may not be aware of these triggers but have uncomfortable feelings of anxiety or nervousness, fears, depressed thinking patterns, brain fog, and physical pain and body sensations. Once the isolated “land mine” of trauma has been reprocessed, it is neutralized so it won’t go off and flood into the present anymore. It becomes integrated into the “big picture” of your life so it DOESN’T HAVE THE POWER TO DRAIL YOU FROM YOUR PRESENT ANY LONGER!
EMDR helps integrate, or metabolize dysfunctionally stored material from the past so it no longer causes distress in the present. After an EMDR session the memory is literally stored differently in the brain. Scientific SPECT scans show differences in activation in the brain when people think about the trauma before, and after EMDR. Your own brain does the healing, and you are the one is control!
An EMDR session is 60-90 minutes in length. We will process a past current memory issues. These sessions are covered by Blue Cross Blue Shield, Preferred One, and all MA Insurance.
We also now offer Accelerated Resolution Therapy - which is a 1.5 hour session. This is a form of therapy which has been shown to achieve benefits more rapidly.
